Simple Mistakes to Avoid at the Laundromat

We all like our clothes to be shiny new and laundry helps achieve it. Even though laundry seems like a simple task, we are certainly prone to making errors from time to time. In such instances, it is possible that some of the basic mistakes can have a detrimental effect on the lifespan of the clothes being washed.

The biggest mistake made while washing clothes is to eliminate the strains by using excessive force. This usually involves scrubbing excessively on the dirty spots. While it may seem to be enough to get out of the stains, it is highly ineffective and can actually cause significant wear and tear on the fabric. This in turn results in the garment showing signs of age rather prematurely.

One can generally use a clean cloth for this purpose, and it is preferable that this cloth be white in color so as to avoid any colors being transferred along the way. This procedure helps keep the stain in check and prevents it from spreading.

We often make the mistake of using too much soap in an exuberance. There is also a preconceived notion that lower amounts of soap will lead to less quality cleaning, while greater amounts of soap would lead to the opposite. However, laundry soap is not designed to work this way and there is likely to be a significant quantity of residual soap still left on the garment. Even though the garment may have been rinsed thoroughly, this residual soap fails to rinse off. As this excess soap may be concentrated on areas like the collars, it serves as the perfect place for the build-up of bacteria.

Rather than having clean clothes to wear, you would end up having a garment that serves as the perfect growing medium for foul-smelling possibly causing bacteria.

It is also recommended that all the zippers – on your pants or jeans, and even on upper body garments – should be zipped before washing, as it can also serve as a perfect multiplying spot for bacteria. The zipper teeth can also be quite damaging when they get caught up against other garments. These would cause pulls and tears which will end up reducing the life of the garment.
